Aunt Heather

According to NPR, I’m a PANK – Professional Aunt No Kids and for now, that is exactly how I intend to stay.

I am a 35-year-old single Delawarean who enjoys staying busy.  I am a Vice President at a major financial institution and I love playing softball, attempting to golf, travelling, volunteering, doing a bit of event planning for the family and sometimes I get to the gym.  My biggest joy comes in the moments I get to spend with my nephew, Kevin, or listening to my niece, Nora who lives in Spain, chatter away in the background while I speak to her mother on the phone.

As the middle child, I am a good blend of Aly’s sensibility and Kate’s kookiness.  Somehow we work well together!  I admire my sisters for everything they have done to bring my beautiful niece and handsome nephew into this world.  It’s been an interesting year…..

2010 started with a mother/daughter trip to Puerto Rico and ended with me as “Cool Aunt Heather” to two gorgeous human beings!  Somewhere during that year, I bought my first home, adopted a cat named Monkey, travelled frequently for business, played on two softball teams and in one golf league, attended my sister’s wedding, and planned two baby showers.  Apart from Kevin’s very anticipated hospital discharge and a couple of visits from Kate and Nora 2011 has been a much quieter year.

And just when I was starting to think “what am I going to do now”; my sisters announced their decision to begin Kate & Aly and asked me to consider contributing occasionally for a bit of the PANK perspective.

FAMILY PLANNING?

When I was in college, my plan was to work for a NGO outside the US, get married around 30 and maybe have a kid or two.  In reality, I have worked for a couple of major financial institutions (one in Dublin, Ireland), got married at 27 and divorced at 30 with no kids.  Life has a funny way of working out.  I am delighted being an aunt but I have been considering the  “what if I did the single mommy thing” question.  Over the next year or so, I’m going to explore my options.  My sisters are supportive of my choices and they just want me to be happy.  They are also encouraging me to get back into the dating scene.  I’ll keep you posted on how this works out.

You are a beautiful person and very capable of achieving whatever you put your mind and heart to. You are a wonderful aunt and a very special daughter. There’s always room for one more grandchild here if that’s what your decide.
