Happy Birthday Nora! Love, Aunt Heather

Was it really only one year ago today that my name officially changed from Heather to Aunt Heather? I knew it was coming and was excited for the day. Looking back now, I can’t believe it has only been a year. In my head, I’ve been Aunt Heather for a lot longer than that. It is probably because my family and friends starting calling me that when we heard the news Kate was pregnant with Nora in January 2010.

I travelled to Madrid with my Dad in November to meet our newest family member when she was just over a month old. My heart melted when Kate put her into my arms. I missed her terribly until her arrival in Delaware for Christmas. I knew I only had two months until I saw her again as I was “stopping over” in Madrid on my way to a friend’s wedding in Ireland. The week that I spent with her was wonderful. I got up with her in the night, helped to feed, bathe and dress her, in addition to our walks and play time.

Her visit this summer was a highlight in my year of amazing events. To see how much she had grown in three short months was astonishing! The first week she was home, she stayed in my house and every morning I woke up (pre-alarm clock which is a feat in-and-of-itself) to her cooing, laughing or just torturing my cat, Monkey. I rushed out of work some nights to get to Dad’s to spend time with her before she went to bed. She’d know when I came into the room; her eyes would light up and she’d crawl her way over to me.

Watching her interact with (read: attack) Kevin, starting to try out walking, celebrating her early first birthday, going to the beach, experiencing her first hurricane and just seeing her be herself and grow are wonderful memories that I will cherish. I admit that I was a bit slow to correct people when they said how beautiful MY daughter was because she is just a little bit mine too.

Nora has been a blessing to our family. I am proud to be her aunt and godmother.

To my sweet Nora:
Wishing you the happiest birthday! I’m looking forward to another wonderful year with you in my life and many more to come.
Love,
Aunt Heather

P.S. Monkey sends you happy birthday wishes too (even though you scare the life out of her).
