Back To Work

Now that my daughter Nora is almost a year old my husband and I decided that it would be ok if I went back to work and so far the transition hasn’t been too bad. As for her care we’ve been lucky because my husband is home with Nora for now since he has a substantial amount of leave due to his deployment in Afghanistan.  However he will be returning to work in a few weeks which is when my father-in-law will be taking care of her.  Eventually we’d like to put her in daycare for reasons of socialization but for now we feel comfortable leaving her with her grandfather and he’s delighted to watch her.

As far as the guilt goes, it really hasn’t set in yet.   I’m enjoying my job although I didn’t miss working at all last year.  I really loved being home with my daughter every day, but I know she’s in good hands    I’m only working about 30 hours a week and since I am a teacher I have lots of days off so I don’t feel that she’ll never see me or suffer from my absence.  I think it’ll actually be good for her to interact with other people on a daily basis.

Probably the hardest part of me going back to work will be how my husband and I divide daily chores and childcare duties.  He’s used to me doing the majority of the housework and cooking as well as being in charge of Nora’s food, clothes, etc. but now that I’m not at home as much he’s already seen a drastic change in the running of our household and I don’t think he’s too delighted.  But that paycheck at the end of the month will help smooth out those bumps in the road ahead of us.

Oh and did I mention that my husband and I are both in university?  He’s in his last year of his second bachelor’s degree and I will be working on a Master of Education.  Oh how we love to make life complicated.
